Last night, after eating dinner and slackjawed-gaping our way through two sitcoms, Jessi flipped through the movie channels and settled on Sense & Sensibility, the 1995 film based on Jane Austen’s work of definitive English…blech.  I can’t even talk about it like it’s a real movie.

After watching this abomination for about fifteen minutes, I grew tired of watching Alan Rickman stroll around the countryside with walking stick while Emma Thompson looks dour and asked Jessi what the movie was about.

“This person is in love with this person, who is in London.  This person is in love with this person, who is actually a douchebag.  This person is in love with this person, but they’re in love with the douchebag.”

Is there anyone in this fracking movie who’s not in love?  And since when did watching boring English people fall in and out of love (and not sweaty, steamy, Cinemax love…but boring, proper, Englishmax love) constitute a decent film?  This movie is a freaking soap opera.  A soap opera with very well-written dialog and no skin.  Blech again.

Don’t get me wrong.  The acting is fantastic.  But ultimately, if I don’t give a crap about what the actor is acting like they’re doing, it’s not a very interesting film is it?

I began to wonder if Jane Austen had killed herself, because stories like Sense & Sensibility are usually written by people who commit suicide.  I’ve since discovered that she died of something called Addison’s Disease, which is a shame because she really should have offed herself.  Preferrably before writing Sense & Sensibility.

Note:  This rant is intended to convey my displeasure at watching Sense & Sensibility last night while Jack Bauer was on another channel, undoubtedly kicking major terrorist butt.  It should not be construed as a serious criticism of anyone’s personal tastes in film or literature - I’m sure many of my favorite movies and books would seem completely vapid to most of you.  Consider this my best attempt at a Maddox-style teardown of the movie :)
